Building gardens, planting new ideas on improving county’s health

My colleagues at the Petaluma Health Center acted on their commitment to improve our community’s health by removing a large swath of front lawn outside our building on Saturday and replacing it with a substantial fruit, vegetable and herb garden for patients. It’s one way we’re encouraging patients to make health-related lifestyle changes and to reduce obesity, which can lead to serious medical problems such as diabetes and hypertension.

Creating a patient-centered “medical home” at the Petaluma Health Center is an important goal, and we believe installing a large garden as part of the nationwide 350 Home and Garden Challenge was a meaningful step in the right direction.
